Theory Test

Part 1: Multiple choice test

A touch screen system has replaced the test paper, the main reason is to make sure that it is easy to use by everyone and that you feel more comfortable and relaxed under test conditions.

Before the multiple choice test begins you, are offered the option of a practice session, which can last up to 15 minutes. It is a great idea to do this if it is your first time using a touch screen computer or even if you simply want to get in some last minute practice before you sit the theory test!

Don't be afraid to ask for help if you get stuck at any time, using this system there will always be staff available to help you - unfortunately, they won't help you answer the questions - nice try!

The Driving Standards Agency has put together about 800 different questions and any of these could be on your test, don't worry though there are only 35 questions on the actual test and you only need to get a minimum of 30 correct to pass. The multiple choice section lasts 40 minutes and if you finish early then fantastic, but do remember to check your answers, do it 3 times or more to be sure.

The multiple choice questions have been made easy to read and even if you have problems with reading, headphones are provided so that the questions are read out to you, 'all in all' this system is very 'people' friendly, which is great for everyone!

Tips to help you

Only one question appears on the screen at any time, so don't panic you wont be swamped with having all questions at once on the screen.

If you get stuck you can leave that question and go back to it after you've completed the ones which you are sure you know! Keep an eye on the time as if it runs out you wont be given any extra time to answer the questions.

You do have plenty of time so read the questions carefully, don't flick through, and make sure you tick the amount of boxes that are asked for as some have more than one answer.

What the multiple choice tests you on

The questions are based on some of these following aspects of driving:

wow, just think how much you've learned to get to this point. Feel proud of yourself its a lot to take in. well done.

Cheating - no thanks

In order to prevent cheats looking over your shoulder for the correct answers, every person in the same test room as you has a different set of questions for their theory test exam. This is to ensure that you show you "know your stuff" and get you prepared for when you pass the practical test. Knowledge of the road is essential to help you become a safer driver.

Finishing your multiple choice questions

When you've finished these multiple choice questions and checked your answers a 3 minute break is available in order to have a breather before you start the 2nd part of the test. Unfortunately its not possible to leave your desk.
