Once you have completed your application for a provisional licence and sent a signed photo along with the correct fee, you'll shortly after this receive, via post, your provisional photo card licence and counterpart. You can then begin learning to ride a motorcycle or moped.
The CBT test is the minimum requirement needed to drive a motorcycle or moped. The CBT course introduces the necessary training to enable you to gain experience of controlling a motorbike or moped safely whilst on the roads. Along with this, you will also need to successfully gain your theory test certificate before you are allowed to drive on the roads.
The CBT Certificate (DL196) is valid for 3 years after February 2001; the training involved consists of learning:-
Training for the CBT test normally commences in a large open space or car park where you can get the feel of the motorcycle or moped balance. You will need to wear appropriate clothing and equipment in order to be seen by other road users easily and to protect yourself in the event of an accident and from weather conditions. A helmet, jeans, preferably leather jacket and strong boots are required for these purposes.
The costs for the course vary, typically from between £70 - £100. The cost of CBT can be incorporated into the cost of a full training course that leads to a motorcycle test.
Most companies provide helmets, gloves, water proofs and a fluorescent jacket so you can be seen by other road users.
The CBT takes about a day to complete. A minimum of two hour instruction, accompanied by a road ride will end the CBT test. You will be tested on all you have learned.
If the examiner is happy that you have successfully managed to take appropriate action, whilst on the road then you'll be awarded the CBT Certificate(DL196).
Remember you can only ride a motorcycle with L plates and with an engine size of 125cc if you only have your CBT. To ride a larger engine bike a further test will have to be taken.
Under 21's who've passed their CBT test and hold a valid certificate, can take further training on a 125cc motorcycle plus a practical test to gain their full licence.
This course consists of about two days training on the road, learning improved motoring skills and gaining experience on busy roads. Your instructor will also help prepare you for the DSA practical test which will be taken on a separate day.
A Direct Access Course (DAC) is the training given to enable you to ride a motorbike which has an engine size of 500cc. The DAC can only be taken if you have passed a CBT test and hold a valid DL196 certificate. You must also be aged 21 and have passed the theory exam in order to apply for the practical test.
The advanced motorbike training is awarded in bronze, silver, and gold. The training can save you a fair amount on motorbike insurance and usually only takes 2 days to complete the skills required to pass this advanced training course.
There are several types of motorbike instructor you can become. Each type of motorbike instructor consists of various stages which need to completed to accomplish the level teaching you wish to do. e.g. Decide if you want to teach CBT or DAC - obviously there is more qualifications and training needed to teach DAC's to pupils.
