The hazard perception test is a new part of the theory test, which was introduced in November 2002. This part of the test is taken after the multiple choice.
It is a great new test, which has been incorporated to try and prevent less deaths on the road by improving peoples reactions to hazards which may develop whilst driving.
This part of the theory test can be tricky at first, but once you've practiced, it isn't as difficult as you may think. Most driving instructors will have good sources of information on how the hazard perception test works, usually on cd-rom and will almost certainly be willing to help you learn the necessary skills required to pass the test. Remember to Practice! Practice! Practice!
A developing hazard is something which requires a driver to either change speed or direction.
The hazard test will judge you on the ability to look at a situation and understand the road scenes plus to recognise potential traffic hazards as they develop. These are nothing knew to you, as we automatically respond to situations whilst driving, sometimes with out even thinking about it. The whole point of the test is to help your reactions become quicker.
The 2nd part of the test isn't as long as the multiple choice - phew!
The Driving Standards Agency has put together approximately 200 video clips of road scenes. Luckily only 14 of these will be in the test. Each clip is one minute long, however be ready for it as the clip will only be shown once. There is 15 scorable hazards, the reason for this is that one clip has 2 hazards on it. Be vigilant and keep focused for that other hazard. Good Luck!
You are marked on how quickly you can spot the developing hazards. Be warned that clicking too early or late may loose you points and clicking too often can cause the clip to be marked zero.
Some of the hazards which may come up in your test could include:
Please note these are just some examples of hazards that could be used in the test. They give you the basic idea.
